Same goes for the graphic designer’s family. Here’s my confession.
Last night, we were at a party, and a friend who had sent us an adorable Christmas card of themselves and their darling new little one asked about our Christmas card. I see a look pass between my husband and my friend. Words are being said in hushed tones. There is a sad, knowing glance from my friend.
“What was that?” I ask.
And then I realized: they were discussing our sad lack of Christmas cards.
Here’s where I have an inability to simply let go. It’s an old holdout from the days of Visual Communications classes at the University of Oklahoma in the days of yore (aka 2001-2004). I simply cannot just buy a cute set of cards and send them out. I just can’t bring myself to do it. For one thing, I hear all 3 of my VisComm professors barking in my head, “Design it yourself! Design every thing you touch!” (seriously, they would say this). ::sigh:: This has created a very difficult situation for me. I love designing, but designing for yourself is the hardest thing ever. There are just simply too many things that I would like to do. It is far easier to design for another client, and thus, make someone else happy.
So there you go. My confession, and a little bit of designer psychology thrown in too.
Am I the only one with this problem? Kathleen, I know you know what I’m talkin’ about.
