This Week

Well, kiddies, the time is upon us! Tomorrow morning, I’m off to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and Wednesday I roll on in for surgery.

I can’t believe it’s been a month since we were up there. In some ways, it’s been a blink of an eye; in others ways, it’s like it’s been three years. I’m not going to lie – it’s kinda been a hard month. I really wish that I could’ve just gotten it over with when we were up there a month ago. Having four weeks to second guess my decision hasn’t really been fun. About two weeks after we got home, I had my big meltdown about it all. I sobbed on the phone to Simon that I just didn’t know if I could really do it, and he told me that I really needed to stop googling the heck out of things. He knows me so well – in my ever-present desire to be on top of information and well-informed, I was driving myself insane by googling the surgery and reading everybody’s random horror stories. I just couldn’t take it anymore. So I have taken a google hiatus! And it was the best thing I could’ve done for myself.

The other thing that I did for myself was go talk to a counselor about what I was thinking and feeling. When I was pregnant with Jude, I was struggling with anxiety big time.  My OB gave me the name of a counselor to go talk to, and it was the best thing I could’ve ever done for myself. I went to see her several times after Jude was born, and occasionally from time to time when I need a neutral third party to bounce some ideas off of. I called her up and made an appointment, post-meltdown. I was struggling with having to be the one to make a decision about surgery – I mean, isn’t this just something that someone else should make the call on? I thought the only time someone actually wanted surgery was when they’re getting a tummy tuck. Or a nose job. In no way is this the same thing!

Anyway, my counselor asked me about how I felt about myself when I’m sick. I told her that I hate being on steroids, that I hate looking at pictures of myself when I’ve been on them, that I feel totally out of control of my body. And do you know what she said? It was golden, totally priceless — “Rachel, this disease is stealing your joy. And you have the opportunity to take it back.”

Whoah. That was totally worth the hourly fee right there! And she was so right! So even though I really didn’t want to be the one to make the decision to make surgery, I am the one making the decision. I am stepping up and taking my life back. And in that moment, I felt a joy about the entire situation that I had not felt before. My time of mourning about it was over. It was time to find the joy in the situation, and look forward to all the good changes coming.

The other awesome thing that happened was when I found Daniel over at the Real Estate Zebra. A few years ago, Daniel went to the Mayo Clinic because he had ulcerative colitis, and he ended up having the same surgery as I will. He was so encouraging – he called me up on the phone and was more than willing to share his experience with me. I can’t tell you how much it meant to me. He struck me as a very charismatic, upbeat person, and the thing he kept saying was, “You will not regret this. You are going to feel so much better, you won’t even believe it.” Whew. Daniel, I am grateful for your input and how open you were in your experience! Thank you!

Finally, more than anything, I have a peace about this entire experience because I know that God is in control. I felt His presence when I sat in the office at the Mayo last month and told the doctor that I wanted the surgery. In my Bible study this semester, we were talking about Jesus when he heals the lame man at the Pool of Bethesda. He asks the man, “Do you want to be well?” What a question! I mean, wouldn’t you think that someone who had been sick for 38 years would want to be healed? But when you think about it, sometimes when you’ve been sick for so long, it’s just easier to stay in your sickness. You can’t remember what it was like to be normal, so it’s just easier to be how you are. Stuck. Because being well requires work, and taking on a whole new set of responsibility. But Jesus knew that – and He also wants us to take action. It means we have faith.

So there you have it. This week, I’m taking that step. I’m choosing to be well. I’m stepping out on faith. It doesn’t mean I’m not nervous or not scared. I am. But it’s going to be okay.

Now we just have to decide what The Last Supper is going to be. 🙂

I’m sure I’m going to pop back in and out over here and give updates as the week goes on. We fly out tomorrow, have a consult with the surgeon on Tuesday, and then go in Wednesday morning for the surgery. As of now, we’ll fly back home on the following Monday.

Thanks so much to everyone who’s followed us on this journey! Your thoughts, prayers, and well wishes here have meant the world to both Simon and I.

xoxo, R.

Oh, Jude. Must you really graze on everibody’s leftovers? I made you a plate all your own!

A Holiday Table via Elements of Style Blog

As always, Erin @ Elements of Style has amazing inspiration for Thanksgiving. I’m adding these two ideas to my entertaining files. I’m not sure where these images are specifically from, but they’re good ideas nonetheless.

Chic take-out containers for guests to steal away those holiday leftovers in.

A whimsical use of kraft paper for the kids’ tables. I wish my kids’ table had been this fun when I was a kid! Heck, I might even have to pull this one out for a grownup table sometime!

And another kids’ table — fringed kraft paper. Too CUTE!

Where do I subscribe?

J.Crew, are you listening to me? Because I’m thinking that a subscription like these would be waaaaay better than some ol’ magazine!
OftheMonth
Who wouldn’t love a cashmere, shoe, or jewelry-of-the-month club? And from J.Crew, no less! To be fair, none of these are cheap. Not one bitty bit. Tres tres cher, but man, what a delight! Congrats to whoever the lucky girl is that receives one of these for Christmas!

Paula Prass

Paula Prass may be my new favorite designer. Her frames are to die for. Well, she isn’t just a frame designer – she does all kinds of fun stuff, including fabric. I was perusing her site today and thought I’d show you too. I’ve seen some of her frames in a local boutique, and fell madly in love. There are tons of great color combinations. I just love their graphic, bold appeal.

This little door hanger sign is hilarious. I think I need one of these for my front door! 😉

The Crow!

My dad has a wicked sense of humor. He always has – he is legendary amongst the family. And my mom swears up and down that one day, she will, in fact, get him back. So anytime we can hatch up some kind of crazy plan to get him, we do.

Back in October, when we went to Lauren’s wedding in Dallas, we were perusing the Pottery Barn and we cracked up over their Halloween decorations. There was this big black crow, and Dad held it up and I took his picture with it. “Look real scared,” I said. We all laughed.  I think it goes back to our shared love of Alfred Hitchcock – who doesn’t love The Birds?

A week later I was walking through Michael’s and lo and behold, there was the exact same crow. I couldn’t help myself – I bought it and hatched a plan. Jude was semi-scared of the crow, but the minute I told him it was Dan-Dan’s (his name for my dad), he was like, “oh. Okay.”  Now anytime he sees a crow, he says “Dan-Dan.”

One afternoon, we showed up over at Mom & Dad’s. Dad was taking a nap, and so I took the crow out to the garage with a roll of tape. In the back of Dad’s SUV, there was this huge cardboard box, and I taped the crow to the lid of the box so when Dad backed the car out of the garage, there would be the crow, like it just flew on in and perched on the top of the box. I showed Mom and she started to laugh.  The next day, I got a phone call – he didn’t even see that crow until he almost got out of the neighborhood onto the main street! He said that there were these big black crows that had been hanging out in the neighborhood lately, and then as he was driving, he looked in the rearview mirror and saw the fake crow and thought, “Oh my gosh, how did one of them get in the car??!?!?!”

Anyway, it was a good little prank, and we’ve been having good fun with the crow ever since. One day, Mom set the crow up with breakfast:

At Jude’s birthday party, in particular, we all took “scared photos” with the crow, and I keep forgetting to post them.

Enjoy our craziness! 😉

Altitude Design Summit – Home

So, the Alt Design Summit sounds like something I would want to go to. Totally. It’s a conference for design bloggers. And. AND! It’s held at the same time as the Sundance Festival. Does it get any cooler than this?

According to their site, you should attend Alt if you fit any of the following criteria:

– People that love talking about design in all its iterations. What it is. How it’s changing. Why it’s important. (Check.)
– People that read sites like Apartment Therapy/drive German cars/subscribe to magazines from Europe. (Check – well, that Apartment Therapy part)
– Design or lifestyle bloggers who want to (finally!) meet their fellow design and lifestyle bloggers. (Check. That’s right. I’m a stalker.)
– People from across all the design disciplines: graphic, industrial, fashion, interior, product, textile. Plus illustrators and photographers too. (Check.)
– Business Owners who make pretty things and want to figure out how to get their products on design sites. (Erm, ok, not me, but interested in learning about this kinda stuff!)
– Advertising Agencies and Marketing firms that want help creating social media campaigns for their design-minded clients. (Not exactly me either, but I’m sure it would be educational nonetheless, n’est-ce pas?)
– Employees who would love to get credit for working while actually hitting the slopes. (I think this fits Simon, so ok, check.)
– People who create inspiration boards. (Check!!!)
– People who look at inspiration boards. (Check! Is anyone still checking?)
– Big-Love fans that want to find out if polygamy is for real. (Um, no. Not me. We can’t win ’em all.)
– Star-struck film fans obsessed with the Sundance hype who want to spend a weekend celebrity sighting.  (Ok, who are we kidding – check.)
Now, will childcare be provided?? Just kidding. Kinda.
Doesn’t this sound like fun, though? I’m thinking super fun.

Further Confirming Our Insanity

Ok, we are all officially nuts. NUTS. After Jude & Noah’s costume party, Dad was remarking that we had so much fun with all the wigs that everybody brought were the life of the party. I think the exact phrase was, “We should bust out the wigs at our next party!”

So, we took him seriously. Maybe a little too seriously.

In the month of November, we have 3 birthdays: Dad (Nov. 5th), Luke (Nov. 10th) and Eric (Nov. 14th). So we did a big combined Wigapalooza. Amy ordered in meat from the Salt Lick BBQ in Austin, TX, and it was incredible. There was also quite the selection of cheeses. And for dessert? A spread of individual slices of cheesecake from The Cheesecake Factory. I mean, it just doesn’t get any better than that.

It was a wigapalooza!

Unless it’s all happening when you’re wearing a crazy wig.

Mullet Simon

Me-YOW. Am I a lucky gal or what? Billy Ray Cyrus, you got nothin’ on Simon.

The Wig Spread

Here’s all the wigs laid out on the dining room table. And it’s true – there’s something about a wig that brings out the funny in everybody. It was pretty hilarious.

laid-back Earl

Everybody that put this wig on manages to look like a laid-back surfer dude. That whole, “I just rolled outta bed and into the surf” look.

Mom made Dad take off the mullet wig – she said he didn’t look good in it. LOL Actually, the mullet wig was probably the one wig that really looked awful on everybody.

Pirate/Gypsy/Fortune Teller Simon

Happy happy birthday to Dad, Eric, and Luke! It was a grand occasion!
